How to do SEO in 2013 Keeping Penguin Algorithm in Mind

The landscape of search engine optimization completely changed after Google Penguin. SEO Experts are still baffled about safe and unsafe strategies. So I thought It would be a great idea to share effective strategies which seems to be working and which seem to be getting nod of approval from some of the best SEO minds around.

Too much links from exact match anchor text need to be avoided: A recent case study by an SEO practitioner confirms this assumption in which he achieved rankings for a mildly competitive ( SEOmoz competition index: 50) like “650 credit score”. This is indeed an insightful case study which matches our recent observations in which we observed that if the anchor text saturation(from links) is more than 30% then you are in big trouble and you might loss your rankings. A good strategy is to focus on quality not quantity and focus on getting links from high domain authority sites. A high domain authority site has extensive social presence with large following, high quality incoming links and good rankings. To check domain authority you can use SEOmoz’s open site explorer ( I swear I am not on payrolls of SEOmoz, too busy running my own SEO company) or if you are an expert then you can use your own intuition based on metrics like traffic ( Alexa, SEMrsuh,Google link operator etc)

Tip #1: Focus on quality links only.

Avoid bare links: Avoid bare links like sidebar links, footer links which don’t add any value to the visitors. Focus on links from content. You can or can not get links from exact match anchor texts. Even a link from natural anchor like” click here, “visit our site here” etc is sufficient. Google even take into consideration the click through rate on these links so try to link the most relevant page and write in a manner that people are actually click on those links.

Tip #2: Get links from content only. Avoid sidebar or footer links.

Follow 20:80(Home:Inner page) ratio for links: According to, Wikipedia is the sixth most popular site on Internet. It ranks for millions of keywords. According to Majestic SEO, Wikipedia has 600 million incoming links to this domain while Its home page has only 6 million links (Approx 1%). So make links for all pages. No more than 20% of totals links should go to home page. It can harm your rankings.

Tip #3: The ratio of links to Home page and inner pages should be 20:80.

Follow 20:80 principle for Anchor text versus non-anchor text links: This instruction is for all all pages. The ratio of exact match to non-exact link should be 20 to 80.

Tip #4: The ratio of links to exact match anchor versus non-exact match anchor text should be 20:80.

Write long posts and detailed posts rich of information: I have always emphasized the need for producing high quality contents. You need to write long and detailed posts on relevant topics for the benefit of readers. Several case studies have emphasized the need for long and explanatory posts on a regular basis. Learn How Content Length Affects Rankings and Conversions Try to write articles with at least 1200 words. The more the better but don’t blab un-necessarily if you have nothing to write.

Tip #5: Write content, rich with information. Its ideal if the number of words is between 2000 to 2500.

Promote your content on social media sites and strengthen social signals: You might have noticed that articles from authority sites rank well without a single link. This is due to the fact that these sites produce lots of content on a regular basis for example News sites, blogs etc. Promote your site on social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, LinkedIn etc.

Tip #6: Boost your social signals by sharing and participating in constructive discussion on social sites.

Write frequently: The more frequently you add content, the better. You can increase your traffic, rankings and conversion considerably if you write on a daily or hourly basis. Did you ever notice that News sites rank pop up quite high for so many competitive keywords. I wrote a blog post on the relation between frequency of blog and relation between traffic , lead and conversion. Read it here: How To Use Blogging to Increase Traffic 100 Times & Generate Leads
If you can not write yourself. Hire copywriters who research and write compelling articles on your behalf. Several big brands order these kind of articles from us.

Tip #7: Write frequently. If possible write on a daily basis.

Get links from youtube etc: We have observed that sites with links ( though they are no-follow) from Youtube perform better than the sites without any links. So share interesting and informative videos and get links from description. Videos tend to rank well and It can help you get traffic and leads too

Diversify your link portfolio: Focus on all kind of link. Be it from press releases, social bookmarks, directories, sites, articles, info-graphics, blogs etc.
